Petra read law at Antwerp and Leuven university. She graduated with an LL.M. degree from K.U. Leuven in 1994. She then spent a term at Jagiellonski University, Krakow (Poland) and joined prof Koen Lenaerts' Institute of European law at K.U. Leuven early 1995.

Petra's interest in European Union law and social law in the wide sense, led to a PhD, in English, on the legal protection of pregnant employees in the EU and the US, in 2002.

As part of her PhD research, Petra spent a year at Harvard Law School, where she gained her LL.M. degree in June 1999. Having returned to Belgium, she started to combine her research fellowship at K.U. Leuven with her puppilage at the Brussels Bar, first with de Bandt, van Hecke & Lagae (currently Linklaters de Bandt), subsequently with Claeys & Engels. In both firms she was a member of the department of labour law, where she gained an extensive experience in a wide variety of issues of social law.

Petra joined the Leuven Bar in 2005, with Dewallens & partners. She remained focused on social law, however her expertise in European law had made her a practitioner in EU law in the wide sense, including litigating before the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg). Petra joined the firm in January 2007, maintaining her practice in social law and EU law.

Although Petra has been a practising lawyer since 1999, she has always maintained a high academic profile. In 2003 and 2004 she worked as a lecturer at the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands. From 2003 to 2009 she taught European and international social law at EHSAL in Brussels (English Bachelor of Business Administration programme). In summer 2009 Petra has been appointed as senior lecturer at the Law Faculty of Hasselt University. She teaches Principles of law to first year law students and Labour law and social security to third year law students. She also conducts research in the field of European social law.

Petra publishes in Belgian and foreign reviews, she is a regulator contributor to the overviews of European Court of Justice case-law , for Tijdschrift voor Bestuurswetenschappen en Publiekrecht (TBP), and the fortnightly Tips & Advies Personeel (in the area of human resources). Petra is also a regular contributor for national and international training programs in European social law for civil servants and judges and teaches in continuing education programs, covering all aspects of social law
